"I'm very happy," said Almagro. "This is the reward for many months of hard work, but there's no time to
celebrate. I have to focus on tomorrow's match and hopefully I can play at the same level."
Almagro and Thiem met in last month's Australian Open second round with the Austrian winning in straight sets.
Thiem had earlier beaten Rafael Nadal 4-6 6-4 6-7, the Spaniard having failed to convert match point at 5-4 up in the deciding set.
"It was a tough match. I had a chance to win and missed it but (Thiem) played well," said defending champion Nadal.
"I'm not worried. I just lacked consistency and need to make fewer unforced errors, but that's nothing."
