Monfils Past Gulbis to Reach Second Round

GaĆ«l Monfils didn’t even have to use his acrobatic skills in order to reach the second round of the 43rd ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament on Tuesday.
It only took the fifth-seeded Frenchman two breaks to defeat Latvian Ernests Gulbis in 6-4, 6-4.
“It’s good to be back in Rotterdam”, Monfils said after his centre court victory. “Especially for the fans, I wore an orange shirt."
"Gulbis has a good service and a strong backhand, but I think I did well. I was able to keep pressure on his forehand and that was crucial for me to win this match.”
Monfils will play Croatian youngster Borna Coric on Wednesday in the second evening match. The 19-year old beat Thiemo de Bakker in the opening round of the tournament.
